The
story of Jorge Cordero begins in Cuba, during the
revolution. Raised in a family in the Holguin province,
800 km. east of Havana, Cuba, Jorge was born at a
time when music and song played an essential role
in Cuban life. Many of his family’s members
were singers, including his mother who performed regularly.
Jorge first learned to play the trumpet and then later
the guitar, but was eventually educated as a percussionist
at Habana’s ‘Instituto Superior de Arte’.
During Jorge’s teenage years, rock was forbidden
in Cuba, and could be heard only on underground short
wave radio stations - in total secrecy. This, together
with his family’s rich musical heritage, made
his transition into the world of rock music quite
a natural one. After several years playing drums and
guitar in various rock bands, Jorge looked back at
his family’s musical traditions, and began to
get the Salsa fever. He formed the group ‘Luna’,
whose repertoire consisted of a mixture of rock and
Latin. ‘Luna’ recorded the album ‘Que
Vida’, and toured extensively, but this was
just a stepping stone in the journey back to his ‘pure
salsa’ roots…
In 1982 Jorge joined the European salsa group “Salsa
Na´Ma”. At that time, the band was looking
for a lead singer, and Jorge thought this would be
the perfect chance for him to further his career in
Latin music. He decided to join the band, and in the
ten years he was with them they played concerts, toured
professionally and released two albums.
In 1987 Jorge had already started to form his present
band, starting with a small setup without a brass
section. The name of the band was ‘Grupo Cordero’
and their repertoire consisted for the most part of
cover tunes. The breakthrough finally came in 1992
when Jorge sent a demo tape of his own compositions
to ‘Festival de la Calle Ocho’ in Miami,
the world’s biggest salsa festival. To his great
pleasure, the band was invited to perform. This was
a major turning point in Jorge’s career. The
performance was a great success, and just before their
return to Denmark a contract was signed with New York
based ‘TOP TEN Records’. The band was
renamed “Jorge Cordero & LGD”, and
in 1993 their first album, "Rompiendo el Hielo"
(Icebreaker) was released in the US. It immediately
entered the American ‘Tropical’ charts,
and the band followed up on this success by undertaking
an extensive US and European
tour.
After a disagreement with the Top Ten Records, which
involved an apparent contractual obligation to record
a further two albums, the band were left with no choice
but to take a long break from the American market.
Two further albums were recorded, "Del Norte
Y Tropical" in 1996 and ”Al Tiempo”
in 1999. Both albums were distributed by Polygram,
but neither album was released outside of central
Europe. ”Al Tiempo” won best album at
the 1999 Danish National Radio World Music Awards,
and journalists referred to Cordero as a “captivating
singer and songwriter, and a completely natural driving
force for both band and audience”. One of the
greatest experiences for Jorge, after touring Europe
and the USA was the opportunity to return with the
band to his fatherland ‘Cuba’ for their
1999 tour.
Residing presently in Denmark, Cordero is the one
of the most prominent artists in Europe within his
genre. He is almost constantly on tour with his 13
piece band LGD, travelling throughout Scandinavia
and parts of Europe. Band members include Cuban musicians
Calixto Oviedo (previous band member of NG la Banda),
Yadam Gonzalez (has recorded with Emiliano Salvador)
and Jorge Egues (has recorded with Richard Egues),
as well as one of the top Scandinavian brass sections.
Free from contractual obligations with the US label,
in 2002 Jorge releases in Europe his finest work yet
- the solo album ‘Salsa Global’ - on the
Temba Music label. Recorded in Miami’s ‘Zarabanda
Studios’, owned by famous Cuban singer Willy
Chirino, guest artists on the album include major
salsa stars Domingo Quiñones , Yanko, Alex
Leon, Grupo Niche, Jimmie Moralez, Luis Aquino and
Mario Ortiz.
